Sendai Tanabata ornaments displayed at the lobby of Museum Tower.
Every year in Japan, beautiful decorations made with bamboo and Japanese paper are put up in front of Sendai Station and in all other parts of the city to celebrate Tanabata Festival.*
Sendai city is one of the heavily affected areas by the March 11th disaster. Even at this difficult time, people in the city made these ornaments for their festival in August 2011, with their strong wish to overcome the extraordinary fate and rebuild their hometown.
To express their sincere gratitude for the support and solidarity of Israeli people, and to help celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Israel, the hand-made ornaments were sent to Israel as a big gift.
Presenting and displaying them throughout the country this year would give them huge encouragement and a sense of solidarity for the coming bright future of Sendai.
* The Tanabata Festival is the yearly celebration of the legend of the cow herd star (Altair) and the female weaver star (Vega) who journey annually from the opposite shores of the Milky Ways to consummate their love.
